Finding Your Best Option
No two people are exactly alike—and no one bariatric surgical option is right for everyone. That’s why we assess each patient to determine the best course of treatment. In general, though, your body mass index (BMI) provides a useful guideline. BMI is based on the relationship between your height and weight. Typically, patients with a BMI of 35 or less are candidates for nonsurgical medical treatment. If your BMI is 36 or above and you have significant health conditions associated with obesity, or your BMI is 40 or above and you have no associated health conditions, you may be a good candidate for bariatric surgery. Long-term medical data and the National Institutes of Health support surgical interventions for patients approximately 100 pounds or more over their ideal body weight. We also consider your overall health, lifestyle, and personal preferences when we help plan the right weight loss path for you. Whatever you need, we’re here to protect your good health.
Surgical Treatments
The bariatric surgery team at St.Vincent performs a full range of bariatric procedures, including:
- Adjustable gastric band (AGB) surgery
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery
- Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery
- Biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch (BPD-DS) surgery
Many of these procedures are performed laparoscopically, using several small incisions and a tiny camera. Others may be performed as an open surgery. In addition, you may be a candidate for the ORBERA managed weight loss system. ORBERA is an FDA-approved, nonsurgical option that has helped thousands of people around the world lose weight and live a more healthful life. Regardless of the procedure determined best for you, the medical team will provide counseling support, nutrition planning, and ongoing resources to help you maintain health.
