Total Joint and Spine Services

Total Joint and Spine Health Services

If you have chronic joint pain from arthritis that interferes with walking, exercise, and other leisure, recreational, and work activities, you may be a candidate for joint replacement surgery.

Or you may suffer from chronic back pain—and back surgery may or may not be your best option.

You wouldn’t be alone: more than 700,000 people undergo joint replacement surgery every year, and many more suffer from back pain that could require surgery. These procedures aim to relieve pain, restore independence, and get patients back to doing the things they previously enjoyed in their lives.

The Total Joint and Spine Health Services unit has created a comprehensive, planned course of treatment for our patients, combining expert clinical care with a patient-centered focus. We are experienced and skilled surgeons, nurses, therapists, and patient-care technicians who specialize in joint and spine care.

We have a dedicated unit for total joint replacement and spine surgery patients inside Hancock Regional Hospital, with beautifully decorated private rooms.

We also believe that you play a key role in promoting a successful recovery. Our goal is to involve you and your family in your treatment through each step of the program—starting with education resources and consultation with a dedicated care coordinator to help with preoperative care and discharge planning. You’ll receive a comprehensive patient guidebook to follow from six weeks pre-op until three months post-op and beyond. Classes to prepare you for your procedure are scheduled two or three weeks before surgery, with a coordinated after-care support program so you keep making progress while you recover at home.

We also work to enlist family and friends as “coaches” to help you through the process. Group lunches, reunion lunches, and even an annual reunion event are all great opportunities to share experiences with other patients and keep your whole care and support team involved.

Total Joint and Spine Replacement Seminars

Hancock Regional Hospital hosts joint pain and joint replacement informational seminars throughout the year. To find out when and where the next seminar will be held, or for more information about Total Joint and Spine Health Services, please contact Shelby Lyons, at (317) 468-4763, or by email at slyons@hancockregional.org.

Your Inpatient Stay

Patients typically have their surgery on Monday or Tuesday. The morning following surgery, patients wear comfortable clothing and prepare for group physical therapy sessions. Patients and their coaches work with the Total Joint and Spine Health Services staff on a complete program of motivation and support. Group lunches held on the unit promote friendships among patients and families. Patients typically return home after a three-night stay in the hospital. Patient guidebooks provide information on stretching and strength-building exercises to do at home, and the patient’s coach is trained to continue support and motivation during the recovery process.

Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine

Hancock Health works with both adult and child athletes to recover from injuries that affect their performance. In younger children who are involved in sports, acute injuries typically include bruises, sprains, and strains, but can also result in broken bones. Teenage athletes are more likely to sustain more severe injuries, including dislocations, fractures, and torn ligaments. Although these injuries can also occur in adults, they are more problematic in children because they may affect growth or cause deformity. Trust the experts at Hancock Orthopedics to treat these injuries with compassion and skill.
